Aluminium
extrusion

To produce an aluminium extrusion profile, aluminium is processed from a solid block into a profile shape. This process is called extrusion. We are happy to explain how it works.

From aluminium to extrusion profile

First, a die or mould is needed. This is a round plate with the shape of the final profile. We also use a round aluminium billet, which is heated to a specific temperature. This makes the aluminium easy to shape, but it does not melt. Heating is necessary because aluminium is normally too hard to press.

Using a hydraulic press, the aluminium billet is then pushed through the die.

Once the extrusion profile comes out of the press, it is cooled with water or air. After that, the profile is stretched and cut to length. We use artificial aging of the aluminium to adjust properties such as strength and hardness.

Depending on the selected aging method, the profile is heat-treated. After extrusion, the profile can also receive a surface treatment, such as anodising or powder coating.

We always agree in advance with you on which treatment your profiles will receive.

Alloys

We offer many types of alloys that can be extruded. Each alloy has its own unique properties, such as weldability and formability. The most commonly used alloys are EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063. These contain magnesium, silicon and of course aluminium. The selected ageing process increases the material strength.

EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063 are suitable for decorative anodising and have high corrosion resistance.

Lage matrijskosten

Aluminium profile tolerances

When extruding aluminum, we deal with profile tolerances. These are small dimensional variations that can occur during production. To keep these within certain limits, standards have been established. EN 755-9 is the most commonly used standard in aluminum manufacturing. In addition to EN 755-9, we also apply EN 12020-2 as a standard.

mould

A die / mould is always manufactured with minimal wall thicknesses. During the extrusion process, the die wears down, causing the wall thickness of the profile to increase. Once a dimension reaches the maximum tolerance, the die is replaced with a new one.

Is your head starting to spin? We’re happy to help you think along about which standard is best suited for your custom profile. Request a callback or get in touch with us.
